Enjoying Your Career

Jessica Dill

Business Advisory Manager

Grant Thornton LLP

If we learned everything we needed to know back in Kindergarten… then enjoying your career should be as easy as “LMNOP”.

Life

·         In order to achieve a work/life balance, you have to GET A LIFE!

·         Your best individual work-life balance will vary over time, often on a daily basis.

Mentors

·         Like the proverb says, “it takes a village to raise a child,” it is critical to your career and your sanity to have mentors

·         Mentors can provide advice, direction, and an occasional shoulder to cry on (only in extreme circumstances, of course!)

Non- Negotiables

·         Non-negotiables are your core values and/or activities that you are unwilling to compromise.

·         If you compromise on your non-negotiables, you will be unhappy.

Obstacles

·         Be prepared to encounter obstacles.  You will be challenged, frustrated, overloaded, and even occasionally have a bad hair day!

·         “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste, and what I mean by that is an opportunity to do things that you didn't think you could do before.” - Rahm Emanuel, White House Chief of Staff

People

·         Work with people that inspire you.

·         Work with people you like.

·         Learn to work with people you don’t like and/or people who don’t like you.
